Benjamin DeVane
(1795-1878)


Benjamin DeVane was born in Bladen County, North Carolina, on 4 Feb 1795, the son of John DeVane, Jr., a Revolutionary War soldier. He grew up there and married Mary Rodgers. In 1819 he moved to Bullock County, Georgia and lived there until 1828. Then he moved to Lowndes County, Georgia and in 1848 to Madison County, Florida. Shortly after the Civil War he moved to Simmon Hammock, near Seffner, Florida in about 1869 he moved to Springhead Section. He homesteaded on what is now known as the Old Ben Harrell place on the Wiggins Rd. Benjamin was the first DeVane to settle in Hillsborough County.

In 1819, DeVane moved to Bullock County, Georgia, where he lived until 1828 when he relocated to Lowndes County, Georgia. In 1848, he moved to Madison County, Florida, where he lived until shortly after the Civil War. At that time he settled in Simmon Hammock, near Seffner, Florida. By 1869, he had once again moved, this time to Springhead Section. He homesteaded on what is now known as the Old Ben Harrell place on Wiggins Road. Benjamin was the first DeVane to settle in Hillsborough County.
